“Ukiyo” In Japanese refers to the temporary world in which we live, in contrast to the permanent world that lies after death.
The Sculptures are made of burned rice paper coated with resin and embedded porcelain pieces.
Recycled water bottles collected by Rye middle school students are attached on the bottom for buoyancy. Solar powered LED lights inside the bottles will shine through at night, highlighting the porcelain letters.
The sculpture may evokes the sinking coastal line or melting icebergs during the day and at night, may remind viewers of constellations or phosphorescent planktons in the ocean.
Letters stand for the “next seven sinking cities” in the world, including New York.

I am hoping to create an installation that reminds people of the preciousness and fragility of nature, and the alarming change we are experiencing.
